Claude Code
When does the Claude Code usage limit reset?
Anthropic says the Claude session limit resets every five hours and the weekly limits reset once a week. The exact moment is specific to your account, so do not count hours from memory: read it from Claude Code, which reports a reset time with each limit on Pro and Max plans.
Where to read the reset time
- When you hit the limit, Claude Code's message says when it resets.
- In
/usage, which shows your plan usage limits. - In a status line. Claude Code passes the five-hour and weekly percentages, with their reset times, to custom status lines after the first reply of a session.
- In the VS Code status bar. The free Usage Meter reads that report and shows the time to each reset when you hover the item. Paneherd shows the same countdown in its sidebar.
Two clocks, not one
The five-hour session limit and the weekly limits run separately. You can be well under the weekly figure and still be blocked by the five-hour one, or the other way round. Watch both: the one closer to 100% decides when you stop.
Things that do not change it
- Opening more sessions. They share one allowance and use it faster, but the reset time belongs to the window. See how parallel sessions use the limits.
- Switching between claude.ai, Claude Code and Claude Desktop. They count toward the same limit.
- Using an API key. Pay-per-token usage has no such window: usage vs API usage.
Frequently asked questions
Why is no reset time shown?
Claude Code reports limits after the first reply of a session, and only to Pro and Max subscribers. Send a prompt first. The Usage Meter also hides a window that has already reset until the next reply.
Does Codex reset on the same schedule?
Not necessarily. Its windows depend on your ChatGPT plan: Codex CLI usage limit.
